Wednesdays with Words: Rainbow Colours Thundering Sky
I think some (most, all?) of you are aware that poetry isn’t my strong suit. I want to know it better, understand it better, love it better … but I struggle. However, a book of poems as we start out for National Poetry Month seems appropriate (even if the poet is Canadian).
One of my favorite contemporary authors is Carolyn Weber and on Tuesday she published a book of poetry, Home Going: Poetry for a Season. Despite my precarious, trepidatious feelings about poetry, I bought it right away. I read the first 8 poems immediately. And I clicked with them right away which – I admit – surprised me. The images are so good. The ideas aren’t hidden away trying to be clever. The ideas are deeper than they first seem. Some help us to see the world around her. Some tell a story. The first poem, ‘At the Gate of the Beautiful,’ gives us glimpses of a local church and of Eden … both from the outside peering in. We can see in, but we can’t *get* in and are thus the prisoners:Looped into ornate place,
the iron bars seem bent
on keeping us out,
imprisoning me a seeker.
My favorite so far, though, is “Intention,” the second poem in the collection, because of this beautiful stanza:

I absolutely love Carolyn Weber's writing but I, too, am not a huge fan of poetry. Having her as the author though, might sway me to buy the book.
I would recommend trying it, her word pictures are as good here as in her prose.
Poetry is not my strong suit either! Thanks for sharing that with us- and for sharing Carolyn Weber's work. I am trying to understand, as I already "appreciate", poetry.
I get you … I philosophically appreciate the idea poetry, but practically I struggle. I hope you enjoy her work; I do very much.
I'm not familiar with her, but I have been really enjoying poetry in recent years. I really like Longfellow, Milton, and Keble so far.
We've been reading Tennyson for AO and so many of them are sad. I don't know who's coming up next …
