Wednesdays with Words: Ocean of Truth
As you are all certainly aware, I was at the Cincinnati Great Homeschool Convention over the weekend. It was so good and my mind is still a bit full from the words I heard.
I could certainly fill up this post with al kinds of words and quotes, but one of my favorites was a quote referenced by Andrew Kern from Isaac Newton:
I love this picture that Newton (of all genius!) gives of himself. He who discovered motion, gravity, calculus … considers them to be a shell or pebble and himself blind to the ocean of truth.
Kern was using this as an illustration to remind us as homeschoolers to simplify. We can’t do everything, so we must do what can be done and not be fearful of what cannot.

DId he name calculus? Because someone thought it was a good idea to name that branch of mathematics after a pile of pebbles. 😉
According to Wikipedia it was the other guy, "Today, both Newton and Leibniz are given credit for developing calculus independently. It is Leibniz, however, who gave the new discipline its name. Newton called his calculus "the science of fluxions"." But that woulda been cool.
Just pinned that quote. One day I'd love to attend a homeschool conference in the US and rub shoulders with so many fellow home educators.
It is so much fun! I'm looking forward to trying CiRCE one of these years. If you make it to cinci, I can find a place for you to stay, too.
It's going to be back in Louisville either next year or the year after — last year they announced the locations of the next three or four conferences.
I'm hoping to meet Mystie and Brandy. Texas might be more central for all of us. I was tempted by Louisville, though.
The GHC inspired my quote for this week as well. SO MUCH good material to process and (hopefully) write about!
You aren't kidding! My notes are extensive … I think Saturdays may see some of that thinking. It was so good to meet you and talk about some of those things!

Oh, good, good, good quote & thought by Andrew Kern!!! I think if we lay foundations, give our children tools for knowing how to learn & set them free with lots of great resources, THEY FLY!!! :):):)
