Wednesdays with Words: Coax Those Dreams
Then spring came. Not all of a sudden; it had to fight winter off. But the sun, hidden and helpless for many weeks behind heavy clouds, was riding high again and it was helping spring against winter. By the end of March they won the fight, spring and sun.
We are reading A Tree for Peter when we have a few minutes left at the end of Circle Time and came to this passage on Tuesday. Such a beautiful description for what the weather is doing in our neck of the woods here at the beginning of April.
Seredy is talking about a natural thaw and a community thaw all at once. It’s a beautiful, multi-faceted example. In this instance, when one thing of beauty enters the neighborhood, it draws all of the community together and they begin to work together, to rest together, to encourage one another. It’s a beautiful passage and I can’t recommend the book highly enough.
Visions of a real garden that would fill the yard with green and blooming things began to grow in their hearts. They saw themselves and the ones they loved in the dream garden and they smiled at what they saw. Each one had a dream and each one thought he was the only one who dared to dream of happinesss and beauty in Shantytown. But spring and the sun can see growing things even if they are dreams hidden in people’s hearts. And maybe the sun said to spring: “You get them into the yard all together and I will coax those dreams out of their hearts.”

Kate Seredy has a unique writing voice. I had a mixed reaction to this book – lovely writing but a bit weird in the storyline. Loved the ending.
There is some weird mysticalness, but I love how she portrays natural beauty- and Christian piety – as bringing together and lifting a community. That is a message we need desperately today.

We don't have this Seredy book yet, but we have enjoyed her The Good Master series. Thanks for reminding us that spring happens on many levels.
I'm going to have to see the order of The Good Master series because I have several of those and will probably go there next.

We were saying essentially the same thing about each other's author at essentially the same time. We ended up finishing this today and … wow. Highly recommended. Short, sweet, profound.
