Book Bag for January 8, 2015

Yesterday, I decided to start sharing with you my current book bag in a blatant attempt to create accountability in my reading and to read widely with discernment. I hope to share this feature every other week here at ladydusk.

I really do have a book bag.  Years ago at the Cincinnati Homeschool Convention, Memoria Press gave away these great canvas bags when a purchase was made.  They have continued with the practice, but the bag from the first year is superior to the future ones; wider, bigger, better handles.  I love this bag.

At the moment it has the following occupants:
Miscellaneous Items:

• Mommy’s Very Important Planning Notebook: I’m planning our Homeschool year.
• My Commonplace Notebook (pink and white and hardcover)
• My Green and White Brain Dump, general notes, I need scratch paper notebook
• Black pen and pencil case (hiding down there in the corner)

And the reading, with categories (subject to change):

• Periodicals: CiRCE Magalog; The Classical Teacher; Sarah Mackenzie’s Flourish. I’ve finished Flourish, it needs disposed of.  I’m going to do The Classical Teacher first (finished it on Wednesday [grin]) because I know I’ll want to spend a lot of time with CiRCE.
• Memoir/Biography: The Narnian by Alan Jacobs. I’ve learned in the last several years that I really like the genre – it’s that people/relational part of me.  I was loving this biography last winter before I got off track and would like to finish it.
• Devotional: For the Love of God by D.A. Carson. We’re doing this as a family this year, so I expect it’ll be here for a while.
• Education Philosophy/Charlotte Mason: Consider This by Karen Glass. I’m going to have a lot of CM reading this year as I try to get up to speed.  This is the first in that effort.
• Fiction: Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis. Another I was sidetracked on last year.  I was surprised by how much I was enjoying this as it was a touch dark.
• Whim/Fancy: What’s in a Phrase? by Marilyn Chandler McEntyre. I absolutely adored her book Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies several years ago and am enjoying these little snippets of meditation on scripture now.  She writes beautifully and insightfully.
• Mobile Reader: Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers.  I really need to keep going on this, it simply hasn’t grabbed me yet. Not always in my book bag, but I almost always have it with me.
