Yuletide Session 2013
We enjoy our Yuletide Session. This week, for Thanksgiving, we’re mostly off. No school except piano practice & lesson. (Here are our plans and thoughts from 2010, 2011, and evidently nothing from 2012!)
Starting Friday, we’re going to read The Handel’s Messiah Family Advent Reader. I must find the CD, though I have some suppositions as to where it may be.
We’re going to continue working on Luke 2:1-20. We’re going to work on our same carols (one each week): O Come, O Come Emmanuel; Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus; Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence; Silent Night through Christmas Eve and Joy to the World after. We may do While by Their Sheep and We Three Kings for the weeks leading up to Epiphany.
The children have been playing Christmas songs from Pure and Simple Christmas and Christmas Medleys from Students for a couple of months. They’ll continue working on them.
The children decided that they’d like to memorize ‘That Holy Thing‘ by George MacDonald during the session.
We’re going to use “My First Advent Copybook” for R-girl and “My Lessons and Carols Copybook” for the other children. ETA: N-boy is going to work on the same copybook as R-girl, M-girl is going to do the other one.
We’re going to attempt to do one project a month week from Shining Dawn Books’ Nature Study Through the Holidays.
Maybe we’ll read from Rembrandt: The Christmas Story. We’ll read lots of Christmas books from our collection. I hope to make M-girl do math 3 days per week. N-boy has 5 or so lessons to finish over break, too.
We have fun activities scheduled: Baking Day with grandparents; Family Progressive Dinner; First Friday; CF Breakfast with Santa; 1920s Christmas activities at a local park; Downtown Columbus Adventure; Ice Skating; a Progressive Choir concert between 3 churches; Ohio Village’s A Dickens of a Christmas; and more! Should be exciting …
I hope that we’ll be baking and crafting and watching Christmas videos and enjoying being together.
Sounds like a lovely Holiday break! Enjoy your vacation before starting your new school year!
Is there a local "You-Sing-It" Messiah?
There isn't, but one of the choirs at the Progressive Concert is doing pieces from the Messiah.
Sadly, there is one that wasn't posted about until Sunday … and we already plan to be out of town. Boo.
The advent book looks really good but too expensive to buy. 🙁
I kept my eye out and bought it in the spiring or summer. I think it is getting harder to find because it's OOP. I was shockked that it was more exipensive on ABE than Amazon …. I linked to GoodReads because it was so pricey.
Love your plans…I have never heard of those copybooks and never considered doing Advent copywork! You are giving me some things to think about… 🙂
A couple of years ago she posted them for free download and I got them then. They're nice books.
