Weekly Report for August 13-17, 2012

We had a pretty good week of lessons. Monday through Wednesday were solid, complete days.  Yesterday and today involved reading and cleaning and music appreciation and Latin.  I recorded the Boston Pops at Tanglewood from PBS for the kids.  M-girl, in particular, loved it.

Phonics:

R-girl: is starting to work on r-controlled vowels. I am always chafing at this point because my kiddos can read and really need the practice of multi-syllable words more than more single syllables words, but I’ve learned to trust the process.  We’ll take our time.

Assigned Reading:

M-girl:  is almost done with On the Banks of Plum Creek.  She’s taken over writing some of her narrations for this, which I’m thrilled by!

N-boy: finished Homer Price.  I’m having him start Farmer Boy today.  He’s sure he won’t like it … just like he hasn’t liked any of the other books I’ve assigned him (ha!)

R-girl:  is reading The Littles and loving it.  She wants to read two chapters every day! I need to remember what to have her read next.  I love having these weekly reports to remind me 🙂

Math:

M-girl:  is working on two digit numbers and adding.  MEP gets the slow and steady award.  I’m ready to zoom forward, but they’re slowly building concepts in creative ways.

N-boy: started MEP Year 2 this week.  It’s all review at this point, but good for him.

R-girl: took her first math test on Wednesday.  She got 100% right!

Grammar:

M-girl: learned to diagram adverbs that modify verbs by answering “how?” this week.

N-boy: began to learn about prepositions.  By the time I’m done teaching this 3 times, I might have all the prepositions … aboard, about, above, across …

R-girl: learned about naming the days of the week as proper nouns.  She learned “Days of the Week” by Mother Goose.  We learn the old version where Wednesday’s child is full of woe instead of the cheerier version in First Language Lessons.

Writing:

M-girl: is working on the first poetry week in WWE 2.

N-boy: finished the Winnie-the-Pooh lessons in WWE 1.

Spelling:

M-girl: had no problems spelling the words in her spelling lesson for the week.

N-boy: actually did have a few challenging words this week.  I think it’s time for him to start doing spelling on paper instead of the white board.

Latin:

M-girl: watched Chapter 3, worked on her workbook, and made flash cards.

N-boy: watched Lesson 9.  He’s learning to count in Latin!

Penmanship:

M-girl: is working on Q and Z still.

N-boy: is working on R

R-girl: finished e and is starting l.

History: we tried out weaving and did some reading on the beginnings of Islam.

Science: we read about stars and how scientists measure them by brightness and distance.

Geography:  We read about the sun and how it creates the earth’s seasons.

Art:  the kids made name signs to put on the back of their chairs.

Read Alouds:  We started Pinnochio.  We read more of Parables of Nature.

Bible:  We read about the return to the land with Ezra and Nehemiah.  We might finish year one of Covenantal Catechism soon!
