Terry Gross is interviewing James Reston, Jr. today on NPR’s Fresh Air. Mr. Reston has recently written a book called Warriors of God: Richard the Lionheart and Saladin in the Third Crusade. This interview is fascinating within the context of current events, hopefully it’ll be posted within the next day or so. I don’t know how much Mr Reston’s work is “pop-history” or true scholarship, Jim might know more.

Anyway, when I did my student teaching, my cooperating teacher (the one who’s class I took over) was trying a new way to teach Global History – by going backwards. Her thought was that if we could contextualize current events within their historical and social threads, students would be more interested and have a better view of global affairs. I thought it was a fascinating approach, although perhaps not as well implemented as it could have been.
