The Simple Woman’s Daybook for August 1, 2011
FOR TODAY Monday August 1, 2011…
Outside my window… sunny and temperate. For now.
I am thinking… about funny things kids say. I was talking with M-girl yesterday while she was getting ready for church. I suggested to her that she could wear the necklace that Grammy sent her, and she asked to wear the pin too. I said, “Sometimes, M-girl, less is more.” She looked at me strangely and said, “That’s a confusing idea, Mommy.” (Oops! see Errata post) LOL and we saw some trees that had been uprooted by a bulldozer, when Jason explained this to N-boy, he said, “Wow! I never knew [bulldozers] were so mighty!” I love having kids!
I am thankful… Jason’s brother is back safely after a month in the Congo.
From the learning rooms… back to Ancient Egypt this week … the Middle Kingdoms. I also think we’re going to move on to our study of the human body.
In the kitchen… there really isn’t much going on. I may try Mystie’s Intense Coffee Ice Cream.
I am wearing… Buckeye jammies.
I am creating… kitchen habits. Or trying.
I am going… to another Clippers game!
I am wondering… how late the children will rest.
I am reading… oh, all the same things … and all the book club books I failed to complete … I really should try to finish *something*
I am hoping… the children sleep in this morning. No Quiet Time yesterday, late night tonight, and zoo tomorrow doesn’t bode well if they don’t sleep in some.
I am looking forward to… a mostly quiet week at home.
I am hearing… dogs banging on the door to come in. But I want them to stay out.
Around the house… I should fold and iron some laundry.
I am pondering… read aloud choices to follow The Phantom Tollbooth. I was considering The Wind in the Willows, but am wondering if that might be better in a year or two, and now am considering The Cricket in Times Square. Any recommendations?
One of my favorite things… the Lebanon Blues & Ribs fest and meandering through a bunch of antique shops and the downtown every year.
A few plans for the rest of the week: Clippers, kids at the zoo with my parents, Lebanon. That’s about it … doesn’t it sound nice 🙂
Here is picture for thought I am sharing…

I love Wind in the Willows! You could read it now *and* in a year or two. 🙂 Cricket in Times Square is a nice, fun, short one, too. My son plowed through it and the other books in the series, and it was one of the first he recommended when my second son became a strong reader.
I'm trying to create kitchen [and many other] habits, also. Sigh.
Funny sayings: My three-year-old girl ran outside yesterday, waving her arms and shouting, "Frolic! Frolic! Frolic!" And after coming in from running through the sprinklers, my almost-eight-year-old said, "That was a *gl-OR-ious* time!"
OK, so sounds like Cricket in Times Square is better as a read-alone, or (for us) a lunch-time read aloud. Got it. Some people have recommended that I pre-read Wind in the Willows because the language is difficult and to help with the flow … would you agree? And, if so, what should we read after Phantom Tollbooth? This is so hard when all I read at this age was Nancy Drew …
We're trying out a new chore system … let you know in the next couple of weeks to see how it goes.
Love that expressive vocabulary 🙂
Hah! I do enjoy listening to littles! 🙂 You'll have to go to my post today to read about Lizzie.
Visiting your blog for the first time today, I would say it's never too early to read Wind in The Willows aloud to children, it's a wonderful book.

I don't think you'd have a problem with it, Dawn. I was able to make it through, and I am not good at reading aloud. 🙂 Now I have it on audio and we listen to it in the car.
I used to be an elementary teacher at a Christian school (fourth grade). There are so many great books, but it is true that some are better for reading aloud. Some of our successful reads included Little House on the Prairie and Number the Stars. Hope your kids enjoy whatever you pick. 😉
