On this past Friday evening, My brother and sister-in-law, Jason and I attended the Columbus Symphony’s concert: Meyer plays Meyer.

Three pieces were played:

KODALY Dances of Galanta

MEYER Concerto in D Major for Double Bass and Orchestra

DVORAK Symphony No. 7 in D Minor, Op. 70

I very much enjoyed the Dances of Galanta. It moved through what one could tell would be different styles of dance. It was cheery and fun.

I detested the Meyer piece. I think it was because it was too modern. He tried to make a double bass be bluesy/jazzy and it was inconsistent. I think Jason said that there is a reason the Double Bass doesn’t tend to be a solo instrument. I’m sure the CSO paid him quite well for 18 minutes of the excruciating performance – and he didn’t even play the whole 18 minutes!

The Dvorak was a nice return to simple, beautiful music.
