My mom taught 1st grade and under for years. She gave me this playdough recipe. According to her, it will last for a very long time if kept tightly wrapped. She said she only replaced it when it got grungy from 30 little hands playing with it.
Playdough
Mix together:
3 C Flour
1-1/2 C Salt
6 t Cream of Tartar
Heat to near boiling:
3 C Water
3 T Cooking Oil
Dump liquidd into dry mixture and stir fast and hard with wooden spoon. Knead when cool.
Add food coloring and knead into the dough. Store wrapped tightly in airtight bag.
For some reason this reminds me of a conversation I had with Rachel this morning. She’s never ued that white paste every kid I ever knew tasted in kindergarten. Faron said they used to make it his school. Kind of like this clay!
I used to make flour, salt and water clay, tinted with food coloring, all the time when I was a kid. Every time I was alone in the house, it seemed, then I’d hide it under the bed, and my mom would find it when she cleaned or when it began to – um – make itself known. 😉

I’ve been meaning to make play dough for Kate for about a month, with a recipe that using Kool-Aid to dye/give a pleasant smell…
I need to just do it!
Meg hasn’t really figured out how to play with it, yet, but we keep trying. Art is not a strength in this family, but having a nice creative outlet will be a good thing.
David mostly likes to tear a big lump of it into smaller pieces, or presses his shapes into it to make a design. Sometimes he tries to taste it, so I guess it’s good that it’s made out of all edible ingredients!
We do yogurt finger painting (dump lots of yogurt on high chair tray before a bath) and a lot of drawing here.
