Late last night (well, early this morning), I finished Pride and Prejudice. I can now understand why such a work has such high regard. The language usage was lovely, the story was enjoyable, the themes of pride and forgiveness were well woven through the tale. Only a couple of times did Austen break out of her box and write directly to the reader “I cannot tell you more of this …” When she used this tactic, it threw me out of the story with a jolt as I had been so engrossed in the story. Austen allows the reader, along with Elizabeth, to have a poor opinion of Mr. Darcy at the beginning and have that opinion grow as revelation upon revelation occur. We see that our predjudice (pre-judging of others), whether created by our own imaginations or by others’ tales, can totally deceive and harm us and our relations with others.
I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to read it.
