I’m still fighting my way through Mere Christianity. I’m ready to start Part IV about the Trinity. While some of it I disagree with (like when he discusses how we can lose our salvation), and some of it I don’t understand, overall I’m enjoying it.
In Bible Study, we finally finished our discussion on confession. The study took us through 5 Steps to Confession:
1. Acknowledge our sin before self, God, and others;
2. Learn to see our sin with new eyes (how it has hurt/affected others);
3. Feeling the pain of the victim, be it God or another hurt party;
4. Promise to God a change in behaviour with His help – and make reparations or restitution;
5. Accept grace.
This seems all well and good to me, and we certainly discussed it quite a while. My big concern right now is finding how scripture supports this step method. I John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Maybe I’m missing something, but that looks like steps 1 and 5 to me – and none of the ones in between. I guess I may have to extend the discussion one more week …
We’re supposed to read I John 2:7-29 for tomorrow. I’ve read it once, but I think I’m going to go read it a bit more critically now.
