I was driving to work this morning and one of my favorite Rich Mullins songs was on the radio – “If I Stand.” It is a song about how the earth is not our home and we stand firmly upon God’s grace – which was what brought us to Him in the first place.

I recently got Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening and this mornings’ reading was based on John 17:15, “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world.” Rev. Spurgeon then goes on to explain that it is God’s prerogative when we return to Him out of this world. That we shouldn’t seek to gain heavenly audience to avoid trouble as that is selfish, but that desiring heaven for Christ’s sake is a worthwhile endeavor. This is as Paul’s example in 2 Corinthians 5:6-8, “Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”

So, I must ask myself if I long for heaven out of selfishness or citizenship? And even – how much do I long for heaven? Do I love the world and the things in the world more than my true home? Questions to ponder …
