I spent a wonderful weekend with my sister. She’s really my step-sister, but we’ve been family longer than we haven’t. She lives in southeastern Ohio. Her house and property are atop a forested hill outside Laurelville, Ohio (This B&B is down the hill from my sister’s house, the proprieters actually own/pay for part of her chicken flock). Its a beautiful setting. Her lifestyle is quite rustic: she raises goats (for milk), chickens (for eggs/meat) and a horse (for fun); her house is heated with a woodstove; and her garden is extensive. She works for the Athens Hocking Recycling Center writing and educating people about recycling. She’s a very strong Christian, so it is always good to spend time with her. One of the things she’s doing for her work is writing a brochure about Christians and our stewardship of earth as the recycling community has some strong ties and associations with “Mother Earth” proponents, I’m looking forward to reading what she has to say from a Christian perspective.

On Saturday, she ended up having to work at a recycling drive, so I went with her and got to see her work and meet her boss. I even got to help out some, although there wasn’t a lot of participation despite the fact that the drive was in Athens, Ohio which Ohio University has helped to keep firmly planted in the 1970s. On our way home, we stopped at a bookstore/restaraunt/coffee shop in Logan called “Great Expectations.” (A great name for a bookstore, I think!) They had a nice used book section and I left with Quicksilver Pool (Phyllis A Whitney); Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen); and Dare to Discipline (James Dobson). I spent about $10 on the lot (50 cents for Dobson’s book!) and was quite pleased. I’ve only read Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, but really enjoyed it.

I’ve already finished the Whitney book. I really like her older novels.

I came back to Columbus Sunday, making it in time for church (but not Sunday School) which is at 11:00, then spent the day with the rest of my family for my brother’s birthday. It was a really nice day, except I was missing Jason a lot. I got home and he was there waiting for me. That was really cool.

Yesterday, I got my hair cut, but was early for my appointment, so stopped in the used bookstore that is right next to the hair place. This one is “A Novel Idea” and they obviously specialize in fiction. I picked up a book for my sister (shh don’t tell her), Wheel of Fortune (Susan Howatch) because Jennifer and Laurel have recommended it and I want to read (possibly re-read) it, Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte), and Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte). I seem to want to read classics right now! I’ve also decided to re-read The Scarlet Letter sometime soon. I decided that if I’m in a fiction mood, I ought to read good fiction.
