I just got home from the concert.

This was either my third or fourth Caedmon’s show, and my sixth Jars show.

The opening group is a new group: Glass Byrd. The group is comprised of Christine Glass and Marc Byrd. I’ve really enjoyed their work before. Christine Glass has a couple of decent solo albums, and Marc Byrd was in Common Children whose album delicate fade is easily in my top 10, maybe even in the top 5 (Common Children has a new album out: Inbetween Time Why did I not know this?!?!?). I was excited when I saw they were there and were going to open as I had these good impressions of their former work. I was disappointed. They chose slow songs that were very repetetive and not very interesting. I hope the rest of the album is better.

Caedmon’s came on almost immediately after GlassByrd left the stage. I’ve never seen two bands be that quick in transition. They played a good mix of old and new songs. They didn’t play Bus Driver or Thankful, which is a bit disappointing since Thankful is my favorite of their songs. I think Back Home is kind of taking over that spot with a lot of cool percussion. Caedmon’s is always entertaining to watch, especially with the cool instruments played.

There was a nicely lengthed intermission while they broke down the Caedmon’s set to bring the Jars’ stuff out. Unfortunately, that’s the time for the Compassion Int’l spiel. I know they’re supporting the tour and everything, but the little speaches drive me nuts.

Anyway, Jars played a very fun, very acoustic set. Charlie played a piano instead of the organ he’s had the past couple of tours, that was nice. Instead of having a complete set list, they put songs in a hat and let audience members choose. Something Beautiful, He, all sorts of good stuff. I was surprised when they transitioned from Revolution into Flood in the main set since they have reserved Flood for the encore in the past. I was also surprised at how much they played from Jars of Clay and they only played maybe three songs from The Eleventh Hour. They did play a new song for an album that is “supposed” to be released in November. (Yippee!) The song is called Amazing Grace, and if the rest of the album is as good, I might have a new favorite. There was, of course, the required encore. This was where they played Worlds Apart, which is, by far, my favorite Jars song. Yay! Then, Caedmon’s came back on stage, and they had a good ole’ time playing a hymn that I didn’t really recognize, but would assume was an “old Baptist hymn” together. That was really cool, I hope it ends up on a live album someday.

All in all, it was a great time. My brother and sister-in-law went with me, it was actually my brother’s first rock concert, and I think he really enjoyed it.
