I have also been doing some reading. I finally finished Susan Howatch’s Wheel of Fortune and will have more to say about it later.

The other book I’ve been reading and finished was Karen Mains’ Open Heart, Open Home: The Hospitable Way to Make Others Feel Welcome & Wanted. I was mostly disappointed with this book. The first chapter was good, discussing the difference between hospitality and entertaining as one of pridefulness. Then, I’m not really certain where she went for the next twelve chapters or so. I kept wondering why I continued to read something so unrelated to the book’s topic; if the chapters had been longer or more difficult to read, I probably wouldn’t have. The last 6 or so chapters had some worthwhile advice about opening homes to others, but I often found the book doing what it advised against. I felt she often used a self-congratulatory tone and a lot of “me-me-me-me-me” talk whilst advising the reader to talk about “you-you-you.” I’m somewhat disappointed, because I had really been looking forward to reading this, and don’t think it lived up to what I had heard about it.
