We read this book as a lead-up to our Narnia studies because the Pevensie children were evacuated in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
The Clark children are evacuated at the beginning of World War II. The book goes through the adventures they experienced from London poverty and dealing with gas masks, to living with strangers, to gardening and rationing, to running away and experiencing Air Raids in London, to looting and the black market.
The book generally showed good character ideals: hard work, manners, and doing what was right. There were some places where I think negative behavior – like that of the Seecom family – was not revealed to the children as wicked.
The writing was good, the story engaging. There were things to discuss. I’m glad we read it.
I've read all her "Shoes" books and enjoyed them. Didn't realize she'd written other stuff.
Someone else recommended this for a Narnia study. M-girl started Ballet Shoes – and seemed to enjoy it – but never seems to want to finish it. That's the only one our Library has.
Sounds like a good intro. to Narnia. I think my girls would enjoy it.
