Book Review: The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann R Wyss
The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Librivox Download. Excellently read by Kara Shallenberg.
We listened to this on our travels. All five of us enjoyed it immensely.
Obviously, there is no place on earth where this number and variety of vegetation, animals and landscapes reside together on an isolated island, but the information was presented well. The amount and variety of things they got off their ship was pretty spectacular (and convenient) too. I thought it interesting that no one ever got sick, no gastronomical distress even … but that prevented any discussion of herbal remedies.
The enterprise, ingenuity, hard work, family loyalty, and trust in Providence were great for our kiddos to hear.
I enjoyed most, the story of a family. How they worked and played together and how they trusted in God, setting aside the 7th day for rest. I was surprised at the end by who stayed and who left. I’m curious about the continuing adventures of the family and their new friends in places far flung.
Thin is one I want to read. I attempted listening to the Librivox recording, but I lack the time and attention for audiobooks myself. Maybe one day I'll get around to reading the actual book.
Yeah. A long car ride was necessary for us. I had thought we'd read it, but 1) we like to listen to long things on vacation trips 2) the kids have been asking if they could read it and 3) we love Kara Shallenberg. It was a perfect storm.
