Book Review: A Sweet Flame: Piety in the Letters of Jonathan Edwards

Reformation Heritage Books is publishing a series of books called “Profiles in Reformed Spirituality.”  When I was at the Cincinnati Homeschool convention, I picked up A Sweet Flame: Piety in the Letters of Jonathan Edwards.  What a great little book!  Twenty-six of Edwards’ letters, two  from his family after his death, and a copy of his last will and testament.  Several of the letters are redundant talking of books he received, intended to write, or the general state of revival in his area, but there were several pastoral letters that were not to be missed.  Seventeen points on how to grow in piety written to a new believer.  A letter on the perfections of Christ to a grieving mother.  His own concern for his lack of qualifications to be President of Princeton.

I’ve been reading off and on since April and it has been an encouragement to me.  I’ll certainly pick up another in the series next year.
