Book Review: Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling

We finished Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling this evening as our family read-aloud.  This was a *fun* book.  It was fun to read aloud because of the alliteration and tongue twisters, it was fun to listen to because the stories were engaging, it was good to discuss because we needed to emphasize the fact that they are *stories* and not at all historic in nature.  It was a good read aloud because each “chapter” was  a complete story.  We enjoyed Kipling’s use of repetition, and often I had the children fill in word or phrases that were repeated.

M-girl and N-boy liked the “First Letter was Written” and “How the Alphabet was Made.”  Jason enjoyed those as well as “Elephant’s Child.”  R-girl said her favorite was “The Butterfly that Stamped,” but that was also the last story [grin]  I have a hard time choosing, I read almost all of them and liked the ones I read [grin].
