Book Review: Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Library.
This book is in a genre I’ve long avoided. I’ve read my share of Fantasy, but eschewed Science Fiction. My town library & bookstores encouraged reading it this fall and had many activities related to the book going on – including a live chat with Card and opening the new movie early. My husband read this early in October while we were on vacation. His review made me more nervous: isolation and separation made it sad. He tends to like books where everything is sad at the end, me … not so much.
I decided to read it anyway. I’m glad I did.
The writing was engaging. The story was interesting. The characters and their relationships dynamic. The book causes the reader to ask questions about seeing through the perspective of others … of understanding those who are different from you even incompletely. It does explore isolation and separation. It explores how people can and do respond to trauma, disdain, hatred, vengeance, and general difficulties.
I would recommend this book to just about anyone … even the non-SF readers.
And now you can move on to read the *real* story in Speaker for the Dead. I love Ender's Game, but Speaker is a better book and a deeper story.
