Book Review: Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters

I have a weakness for interesting, romantic tales written during 19th Century England … whether in England or out of it.  Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters is a wonderful tale in this style and a mystery to boot!  The characters are interesting, the setting of Egypt is intriguing, the plot is well played out, and the writing style is really quite excellent. 

Miss Amelia Peabody is left half a fortune (enough to be comfortably independent) by her father.  She has a strongly capable character and sound reasoning.  She has Christian charity.  Her studies have led her to an interest in Egypt and so she decides to travel there.  Along the way she meets Evelyn Barton-Forbes and employs her as a companion.  Evelyn and Amelia meet the Emerson brothers and adventure ensues.

I’m looking forward to borrowing the next book from the library.
