Book Review: Bambi: A Life in the Woods by Felix Salten (Family Read Aloud)

Bambi: A Life in the WoodsBambi: A Life in the Woods by Felix Salten

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Own.

All five of us (ages 3, 5, 6, and two adults) loved this wonderful book.

We discussed themes of maturity, self-control, bravery, life and death, God, and love … and many more besides.  Each chapter gave us something to discuss with the children, often something both new and built upon a previous chapter.

Bambi is born, finds out what safety and danger is.  He befriends the forest and matures.  The ‘prince of the forest’ takes notice of him and becomes something of a presence in Bambi’s life.  As Bambi matures, he learns more and more and relies more and more on the old prince.  Bambi learns the truth about God, man, the forest, and the creatures who reside there.

Salten has written a poetic, evocative, philosophic book.  One we plan to revisit in several years as the themes can be discussed even in greater detail.
