31 Days to Surviving Sports Seasons Sanely: Walking the Dog
We got a new dog this fall. We have an old dog, too. Buck and Sandy are fun, beloved part of our family.
Before the season, we were getting into the habit of walking the dogs after dinner each night. It was something we needed to do for our own health and that of the dogs. It is a time to talk of things as we walk along the way (Deuteronomy 6:7). No electronic devices in hand, no distractions of things that ought to be done, simply walking with our family and enjoying that brief time between dinner and bedtime.

Soccer skews our time schedule back, often around half an hour, and the sun starts to set earlier and earlier in the fall.
An early morning walk. I’m listening to The Commons about J S Bach from CiRCE |
Usually our walk goes through a little wooded path in the neighborhood, but with it being darker, we tend to stick to the lighted streets instead.
Buck needs to go with us when we go to soccer. He’s destructive with separation anxiety. Generally, the children need to be a half an hour early before games to practice. Often, I’ll try to walk the dog during that pre-game time.
We’ve been doing Couch to 5k in the mornings three days a week. On the other two days, I’ve been enjoying podcasts while walking the dog before the children are awake or Jason has left for work.
We still walk, when the weather is good, We are building a family culture and Daddy is an important, integral part of that family. If lessons need to be lightened or skewed later in the morning because we’ve spent time with Daddy in the evening, so be it.
That is one of the blessings of homeschooling.
