I checked this out after reading Kristen’s review (she’s going to think I’m stalking her reads).
There was a lot to agree with in this book. There was a lot to disagree with.
Orenstein is coming from an almost completely opposite worldview from mine, certainly very feminist. It was nice to see several things that we could be in complete agreement about. There were more than a few, however, that I could be appalled by (views on premarital relations for example).
This book encouraged me on our refusal of almost everything marketed to children based on some sort of character and discouraged me as I consider the difficulties ahead in raising children (not just girls, though that was her focus) in an internet age where constructing your identity online can be completely unlike your real identity. Where control over your words or images is not your own.
It was good to consider some of these issues; and to discuss at a basic level some with my 6 year old who kept asking me why I was reading a book about Cinderella Eating my Daughter …
